Grain Storage Silos: the grain silo

What is a grain storage silo?

A grain silo is designed to provide optimal storage for grains such as wheat, corn, rye, rapeseed, and soybeans, while adhering to strict hygiene standards. The steel structure of the silo offers protection against weather, pests, and diseases. It also enables the control of humidity and temperature, preserving the quality of the grain over extended periods. In contrast, flat grain storage is more susceptible to pests and infestations.
As such, the silo not only stores grain but also enhances its quality to meet market demands and regulatory requirements.

Silos offer several advantages over traditional storage buildings:
-Ensuring employee health and safety
-Guaranteeing food safety for consumers
-Efficient management of grain/products
-Combatting pests and infestations
-Promoting environmental sustainability
-Maintaining the quality and longevity of grain storage

Privé silos are cylindrical, the most effective design for optimal strength and stability during storage. In contrast, flat grain storage spreads out, requiring much more space.

Durability and Efficiency of Privé Silos
Privé silos are made from galvanized steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion, ensuring their durability and cost-effective maintenance. Grain is loaded into the silo from the top using various transportation methods, including bucket elevators, conveyor belts, and air pulse systems…

How to store and care for wheat to maintain its quality.

Grains are a living organism. With favourable conditions the grains will naturally germinate to form a new plant. The stored grain is an ecosystem.

The quality of the grain stored is a result of the grain itself and its environment.

Whatever the storage conditions, in the present of oxygen, the grains breath. The water content and the temperature of the grain influence the intensity of respiration which leads to a natural loss of material mass.
To limit the loss of dry matter and avoid germination the grain silo is the best solution.

The grain silo can be equipped with thermometry equipment to optimise ventilation.

Hopper-Bottom Silos

Characteristics

A Hopper-Bottom Silo is a bulk grain storage silo with a conical bottom, where the cylinder stops at the upper part of the discharge cone. The load is supported by uprights anchored in cement and supported by feet.

Unlike flat-bottomed silos, the conical bottom design allows the grain to be emptied completely by gravity.

The galvanizing process protects the Hopper-Bottom Silo, with the level of protection being proportional to the thickness of the zinc coating. As such, the cylinder, feet, and frame of the bushel are galvanized with Z600 (600 grams of zinc per m²) (or hot-dip galvanized).

Diameters

Hopper-Bottom Silos are available in diameters ranging from 2.68 to 8 meters, with a storage capacity of up to 600 tons. These Hopper-Bottom Silos can also be equipped with temperature sensors and ventilation systems.

Slope
The slope of the conical bottom can be either 45° or 60°, depending on the type of product being stored.

Hopper-Bottom silos for loading - Conical-Bottom Silos

The loading troughs are designed with a 45° slope, in line with the specifications provided in the downloadable data sheet.

In round Hopper-Bottom Silos, the cone angle remains consistent throughout the entire cone, ensuring smooth grain flow, unlike in square Hopper-Bottom Silos.

Prive SA have been manufacturing silos in France for 60 years.

Privé SA exports 50% of its production.

Conical base silos

Characteristics

A conical base silo is a storage silo in which the cylinder extends all the way to the ground. It offers a more cost-effective alternative to bushels, with a lower price per ton of storage.

The conical base silo differs from silos equipped with a discharge cone. In a conical base silo, the load of the cone is supported by a peripheral hoop and posts attached to the cylinder. The inner slab in a conical-bottom silo is completely unobstructed to allow the passage of grain conveying equipment.

Options

Conical base silos are available in diameters ranging from 4.46 to 8 meters. A bushel has a storage capacity ranging from 8 to 600 tons, depending on its diameter and height.

The cone elements can be either perforated or non-perforated. The perforated option enables the cell to be used for long-term storage, such as after the drying season.

Models

The conical base of the silo is available with a 45-degree slope.

Delivery/Loading Silo

Characteristics

The bushel of loading is a conical-bottomed silo designed for storing and shipping grain. It has a height of 4.40 meters under the valve for truck loading.

Galvanizing extends the lifespan of the bushel of loading. The thickness of the zinc coating directly correlates to the duration of protection. As such, the cylinder, hoop, cone, and feet of the bushel of loading are fully galvanized with Z600 (600 grams of zinc per m²), or hot-dip galvanized.

In a Privé round bushel, the cone angle is consistent throughout, unlike square bushels, where the 45-degree angle is only present on the sides. This results in better grain flow in round bushels, as the flow is less restricted compared to square bushels with angles under 45 degrees.

Models
The conical base silo is available with a 45-degree slope.

Options for bushel of Loading

The bushel of loading is available in diameters of 3.57 meters or 4.75 meters.
It has a capacity of up to 142 tons.

Models of bushel of Loading

The bushel of loading is available with a slope of 45 degrees.

Ventilation and Emptying of Silos: The Venticône®®

Functions of the Venticône®

In a silo, the stored product is emptied by gravity. The Venticône® is a cone-shaped structure positioned at the bottom of the silo. This equipment offers numerous advantages over a flat-bottom design.

The Venticône® is designed to fully empty the silo by gravity and to ventilate the grains effectively.

When the product is stored in a flat-bottom silo, emptying it through the central auger can leave behind a residual slope. This residual slope consists of grains that remain in the silo after gravitational emptying and can vary in volume based on the physical properties of the product. This residual slope can lead to issues such as mould and pests, necessitating regular cleaning of the silo. The Venticône® allows for nearly complete gravitational emptying of the grains.

With a Venticône®, a sweep auger becomes unnecessary. Manual removal of the residual mound places the silo operator at risk of exposure to mycotoxins, which poses a health hazard. The Venticône® also ensures proper ventilation of the grain, promoting better food hygiene for consumers and livestock, as the grain does not come into contact with concrete (unlike flat storage).

The time saved allows farmers to focus on more value-added work.

Additionally, the Venticône® provides ventilation for stored products such as wheat, corn, barley, rye, soybeans, …. The cone’s elements are designed with 1.6 mm deep openings to enhance ventilation. If needed, the cone elements are equipped with wing bolts for easier emptying. Operators can also easily clean beneath the Venticône®.

In summary, the Venticône® is a silos equipment that presents many benefits.

Prive SA have been manufacturing silos in France for 60 years.

Privé SA exports 50% of its production.

Venticônes® models

Venticônes® can be floor-mounted, with the stored grain taken up by a screw inserted into the side of the cylinder and descending to the center of the cell. The screw can be permanently installed in the cell, or used on several silos, to reduce investment costs.

For a Venticône® on the floor, the outlet diameter is 500 mm.
Venticônes ® can be raised to allow the conveyor to pass through.

For a raised Venticône®, the outlet diameter is 250 to 440 mm.
Venticônes® have a 28°, 45° or 60° slope, depending on the product stored.

If the Venticône® is intended for storage of a product that does not require ventilation (wood pellets, etc.), the cone elements are not equipped with vents.

Perforated floors

Perforated floors are an effective alternative to the Venticône®. They provide excellent ventilation across the entire surface of the silo.

Privé SA has been manufacturing perforated floors since 1970.

The perforated floors are made from Z275 galvanized steel.

Privé’s perforated floors consist of a series of floor slats that cover the cell area. The diameter of the ventilation perforations is 1.3 mm, making them suitable for grains and rapeseed.

The supports for the perforated floors feature a 90° bent upper edge to prevent cutting into the floor slats.
The height of the galvanized supports for the perforated floor is either 340 mm or 475 mm, and the clearance under the floor measures 295 mm or 430 mm.

All sealing flanges between the cylinder and the floor slats are included in the Privé offer. Ventilation inlets can have a diameter of 340 mm or 500 mm, while the conveyor inlets measure 550 mm in height and 625 mm in width.

The small gap between the perforated floor slats prevents grain and impurities from getting trapped between them.

The sweep auger engages with the grooved flaps placed around the perimeter of the floor, preventing it from slipping.

The Different Categories of Tanks

Water is a vital element for life, but it can also serve as a powerful tool against fires, depending on the volume stored. Water tanks are reservoirs designed to hold large quantities of water for use in emergencies, such as firefighting. These tanks are also utilized for the collection of non-potable rainwater, the storage of liquids, and as reservoirs for sprinkler systems.

Prive SA have been manufacturing silos in France for 60 years.

Privé SA exports 50% of its production.

Functions

Water storage

Water tanks as a fire-fighting water reserve.

When a fire breaks out, it’s essential to have an immediate source of water to fight the flames. Water tanks are used to store large quantities of water (several thousand liters) for firefighters and fire departments. These tanks can be located close to buildings and can be buried or above ground. Z600 galvanized steel water tanks are particularly useful for this application, as they are durable, corrosion-resistant and can store large quantities of water.

Water tanks as rainwater harvesters..

Water tanks are also used as rainwater harvesters. Rainwater can be collected from roofs, filtered and stored in the tanks for later use. This water can be used to water gardens, fill swimming pools and ponds, or for other non-drinking applications. Z600 galvanized steel water tanks are ideal for this application, as they are weather-resistant and can be easily connected to rainwater harvesting systems.

Water tanks as sprinkler reservoirs.

Sprinkler systems are fire protection systems that use water to extinguish flames. Water tanks are used to store the water required by sprinkler systems. They can be installed inside or outside buildings, and are designed to activate automatically in the event of a fire. Z600 galvanized steel water tanks are particularly useful for this application, as they are corrosion-resistant and can store large quantities of water.
