Grain Storage Silos: the grain silo
What is a grain storage silo?
A grain silo is designed to provide optimal storage for grains such as wheat, corn, rye, rapeseed, and soybeans, while adhering to strict hygiene standards. The steel structure of the silo offers protection against weather, pests, and diseases. It also enables the control of humidity and temperature, preserving the quality of the grain over extended periods. In contrast, flat grain storage is more susceptible to pests and infestations.
As such, the silo not only stores grain but also enhances its quality to meet market demands and regulatory requirements.
Silos offer several advantages over traditional storage buildings:
-Ensuring employee health and safety
-Guaranteeing food safety for consumers
-Efficient management of grain/products
-Combatting pests and infestations
-Promoting environmental sustainability
-Maintaining the quality and longevity of grain storage
Privé silos are cylindrical, the most effective design for optimal strength and stability during storage. In contrast, flat grain storage spreads out, requiring much more space.
Durability and Efficiency of Privé Silos
Privé silos are made from galvanized steel, which is highly resistant to corrosion, ensuring their durability and cost-effective maintenance. Grain is loaded into the silo from the top using various transportation methods, including bucket elevators, conveyor belts, and air pulse systems…
The advantages
- Walls constructed from Z600 galvanised steel (600 grams of zinc per m²)
- Galvanized bolts for added durability
- Privé silos are certified according to Eurocode, DIN 1055 (1987), and NFP 22-630 (1992)

Our Range of Grain Storage Silos
Privé SA offers a variety of grain silos designed for both storage organizations and on-farm use. Our silos are tailored to meet the needs of farmers, cooperatives and storage agencies, providing reliable and efficient storage solutions.
CYLINDERS
- The galvanisation prolongs the life of the grain silo installed for food manufacturing, animal growth and breeding, agricultural or industrial production. The duration of protection is proportionate to the density of the zinc – for this reason Prive SA uses Z600 steel (600gm of zinc /m²) while other manufacturers use Z275 à Z450.
- The hole punching of the steel sheet is done in one press on the cylinder production line. The hole spacing of the grain cells are also very precise and this facilitates the silo build.
- The high tensile steel HTS allows the necessary weight reduction while adhering to safety regulations.
- The proximity of the Privé SA European steel suppliers reduces the environmental impact/footprint of producing our silos
- The corrugation of the silo cylinder sheets 104x12mm allows an excellent grain flow and limits grain and dust retention on the sheets. This in turn limits the risk of insect infestation.
The deeper corrugation used by other companies eg 76x18mm does not allow this advantage. - Privé SA bolts are galvanised (40à100 microns of zinc) which prolongs the life of the silo.
40 800 bolts are needed to build a 17,77m diametre , 20 rings grain silo; - Privé Base® is a system that allows strengthening and protection of the base of the silo with one ring of plastic coated steel 104mm in hight.
- Prive Base® accommodates for imperfections in the concrete base and also facilitates the cleaning of the interior of the grain silo.
- To help with the build of the concrete base Prive SA can supply metal shuttering.
Steel roofs
- Privé SA have adapted roof materials to deal with meteorological challenges ie snow, wind etc.
- The grain silo roofs are manufactured to respect snow and earthquake resistance requirements.
- The roof covering is in Aluzinc AZ185 or Magnelis ZM310 steel which prolongs the life of the silo. These coverings offer excellent resistance to corrosion. You can also choose galvanised lacquered steel (in different colours) for your silo.
- The roof support beams are S350GD+Z600 galvanised steel to comply with EN1034.
- The roof has pressure release zones to comply with ATEX regulations (explosive atmospheres)
- The central and lateral roof ventilation (0.10m²) allow fresh air to circulate around the stored grain which reduces the risk of condensation in the silo.
Galvanised steel Catwalks
- The catwalks are made up of C shaped beams upto 6m long. Thus the catwalk is rigid and can take up to 200kg :m² in weight (NF E85-014 et NF EN ISO 14122-2 Part 2 standards)
- The supports for the conveyors are fixed every 1.5m on C shaped beams allowing the grain conveyor to carry a weight of 250kg per linear metre.
- 94mm x1.5m protection plates are placed between the C shaped beams and the catwalk.
- The catwalk has a pedestrian access made of galvanised metal grating (mesh 30/19 ; height 40mm) a foot guard and handrails.
Ventilation
There are several ventilation solutions for the grain :
- Conical : Venticones.
- Flat :

10 year guarantee on Privé grain silos (see terms and conditions)
How to store and care for wheat to maintain its quality.
Grains are a living organism. With favourable conditions the grains will naturally germinate to form a new plant. The stored grain is an ecosystem.
The quality of the grain stored is a result of the grain itself and its environment.
Whatever the storage conditions, in the present of oxygen, the grains breath. The water content and the temperature of the grain influence the intensity of respiration which leads to a natural loss of material mass.
To limit the loss of dry matter and avoid germination the grain silo is the best solution.
The grain silo can be equipped with thermometry equipment to optimise ventilation.
